Purr-fectly Paws-itive – Navigating National Cat Health Month this February!

February is National Cat Health Month. As you should be taking your cat for regular check-ups with their Vet, you should be aware of health problems that are common within felines. Some of the top health concerns for cats include:

#1: Obesity

Overweight cats are at risk for various health issues like diabetes, joint problems, and heart disease.

#2: Dental Health

Dental problems like gingivitis and periodontal disease are common in cats, which can lead to pain, tooth loss, and even systemic health issues if left untreated.

#3: Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD)

This is a broad term used to describe conditions affecting the bladder and urethra in cats. Symptoms include difficulty urinating, blood in urine, and inappropriate urination.

#4: Parasites

Both internal parasites (like worms) and external parasites (like fleas and ticks) can affect a cat’s health and wellbeing.

#5: Kidney Disease

Chronic kidney disease is common in older cats and can lead to kidney failure if not managed properly.

#6: Hyperthyroidism

This condition occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much hormone, leading to symptoms like weight loss, increased appetite, and restlessness.

#7: Diabetes Mellitus

Cats can also develop diabetes, especially if they are overweight. This condition requires careful management of diet and insulin.

#8: Cancer

Cats can develop various types of cancer, which may require surgery, chemotherapy, or other treatments.

#9: Respiratory Infections

Cats are susceptible to upper respiratory infections, especially in multi-cat households or shelter environments.

#10: Behavioral Issues

While not strictly a health concern, behavioral issues like aggression, anxiety, and inappropriate elimination can impact a cat’s overall wellbeing and may be related to underlying health problems.

Remember:

Regular veterinary check-ups, a balanced diet, plenty of exercise, and a safe environment can help prevent or manage many of these health concerns in cats. See below for links to our favorite products on PetFlow to assist with your cat healthcare needs!
